If you are a new Christian, you have an overwhelming desire to serve Jesus to the best of your ability. On the other hand, if you have a few years of Christianity under your spiritual belt, it should be easy for you to recall the unbridled enthusiasm of your early days in the faith. During those days you very likely approached a church officer with a seemingly endless list of questions concerning what the Christian lifestyle was all about, especially particular doctrinal issues. If you were fortunate, that person came along side of you and discipled you in how to take your initial steps and to begin growing in God’s grace and knowledge. Some of you may have met with a courteous attitude on the part of the officer, but felt that he was hoping you would relax until your enthusiasm waned, so you could settle into being a typical mediocre and moralistic church member whose lifestyle amounted to little more than being nicer or more polite than non-Christians. Such a “discipler” would never think of incorporating biblical truths into his worldview and lifestyle, much less “imposing” Christian truths upon their non-Christian neighbors.**

In this rare, never-seen-before video excerpt - taken from a lecture he gave in Tampa Bay in the early 90's - "Rush" uses autism as a metaphor for a spiritual sickness that has become epidemic: an obsession with self; that whether we are talking about church or politics, people are asking the same thing: "What's in it for me?"

Prescient as always, his warning that this form of autism, if left unchecked, could spell a 200 year dark age for Western Civilization may well be coming true.

New Year’s Resolutions: Remember and Fear

It’s that time of year when we are all encouraged to make New Year’s resolutions. This year, though, the advice I’m going to follow was written long before the 21st century’s economic and cultural woes. This advisor’s recommendations have stood the test of time, and I, for one, will heed his sage advice.

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

The gods of Liberalism

Modern-day liberals – or “progressives” as they more discreetly prefer – labor under an awkward misconception; namely, that there is anything remotely “progressive” about the fundamental canons of their blind, secular-humanist faith. In fact, today’s liberalism is largely a sanitized retread of an antiquated mythology – one that significantly predates the only truly progressive movement: biblical Christianity.

While visiting the Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, Va., a few weeks back, I heard a troubling, albeit thought-provoking, sermon. Pastor John Mabray addressed the ancient Canaanite practice of Baal worship and, though he didn’t reveal it by name, connected the dots to its present-day progeny: liberalism. Baal, the half-bull, half-man god of fertility, was the focal point of pagan idolatry in Semitic Israel until God revealed His monotheistic nature to Judaism’s forebears.

Armed, and Not Dangerous vs. Dangerous, but Not Armed

Part Two

When we become Christians we are commanded to repent from our former worldview and lifestyle, but that does not mean that we are on our own to invent what we imagine is an acceptable Christian lifestyle. The Jews were cast aside by Jehovah and He turned to the Gentiles because they refused to commit themselves to the gospel. Instead, they sought to establish their own righteousness by establishing numerous laws in their Talmud, and it was the man-inspired Talmud, not the God-inspired Old Testament that the Priests memorized and taught. Are we not attempting the same thing today by approaching our cultural issues from our perspective instead of analyzing them from God’s perspective?

Neither does it mean that we are to mentally assent to the truths of Scripture without having any inclination of incorporating the biblical truths we learn into our world and life view. Jesus expects us to commit our complete lifestyle to following His perfect ethical standard of behavior. The following words from the apostle John should prove more than a little alarming to those who are going through life according to their own drumbeat:

The counsel of the wicked

Conversion is the soul's surrender to God, and acceptance of God--as Guide through this world of sin.

"Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked." Psalm 1:1

Notice exactly how this is expressed--it is not "does not walk in the open wickedness" nor even "the manifest folly of the wicked," but "does not walk in the counsel of the wicked." How searching that is! How it narrows things down!

The ungodly are ever ready to "counsel" the believer, seeming to be very solicitous of his welfare. They will warn him against being too strict and extreme, advising him to be broad-minded and to "make the best of both worlds." But the policy of the "ungodly"--that is, of those who leave God out of their lives, who have no "fear of God"--is regulated by self-will and self-pleasing, and is dominated by what they call "common sense."
